Handheld remote or 4G?Choose the right pump control.

Consider the distance—and how you work.

By HONESTUpdated

During irrigation, you reach the other end of the field and realise the pump needs to be switched off. At a fish pond, you have to walk back to the control cabinet to start equipment. Or you have already left the farm when operating plans change. The right remote-control method can reduce these everyday trips.

Handheld remote control and 4G mobile control are two common options for operating pumps remotely. Start with one question: do you mainly work on site, or do you need to control equipment after you leave?

Consider a handheld remote for convenient on-site start/stop control. Consider 4G mobile control if you need off-site operation, shared access, control of multiple devices or scheduled switching.

1. Handheld remote: start and stop equipment while working on site

A paired handheld remote sends on/off commands to a receiver. Basic remote switching does not depend on Wi-Fi or a mobile network. Carry the remote with you and operate equipment within its effective range.

For example, while checking water delivery or adjusting irrigation positions, you can send a start/stop command without returning to the pump house each time.

The HONEST HT-9220KG series offers different remote and receiver-antenna configurations to suit operating distances and installation conditions.

How far can the remote reach?

Depending on the model and configuration, the theoretical remote-control range can reach 1–5 km. Buildings, terrain, vegetation, surrounding signal interference and antenna installation affect communication in real use. Actual range is often several hundred metres to approximately 1–2 km and must be checked on site.

These figures are selection references, not guaranteed distances at every location. An open field and a built-up area may give different results even over the same distance.

Before purchasing, check:

  • Where is the furthest point from which you need to operate the equipment?
  • Are there walls, trees or terrain blocking the path to the receiver?
  • Where will the receiver be installed, and can the antenna be installed appropriately?

Providing this information together with site photographs helps identify a suitable configuration.

2. 4G mobile control: manage equipment after leaving the site

4G control transmits commands over a mobile network. Your phone does not have to remain within the direct radio range of a traditional handheld remote.

As long as the controller's 4G connection, your phone's internet connection and the supporting service are working, you can operate equipment from another location. The network at the installation site matters more than the number of kilometres between you and the pump.

The HONEST HT-2401G supports App and WeChat control, shared access, multi-device control and scheduled on/off operation for flexible work arrangements.

Remote start/stop with fewer dedicated trips

You can send commands from home, an office or another work site while the pump remains at the farm. This is convenient when you regularly manage equipment across different locations.

Shared access for teamwork

You can share a device with other users so that family members, colleagues or other operators can control it from their phones. This suits shift work and shared equipment management. Agree on operating responsibilities to avoid duplicate or conflicting commands.

Manage multiple devices from one phone

One phone can manage multiple devices and send control commands to several devices together. This reduces individual operations when arranging start/stop control across multiple points.

“Control together” means issuing a batch control operation. Each device's actual response may still vary with network conditions.

Scheduled switching for routine work

For work with regular operating times, set scheduled on/off times to reduce repetitive daily actions. Adjust the schedule when work requirements change.

Whether scheduled operation suits a task also depends on the water supply, equipment operating conditions and required protection.

4. Choose for your actual working conditions

Working in the field and reducing trips to the pump house

Start by considering HT-9220KG. Check normal operating positions, the greatest distance and obstacles, then choose an appropriate remote and antenna configuration.

For users who primarily need to switch a pump on and off on site, handheld buttons provide a straightforward way to operate it.

Frequently leaving the farm while still needing control

Consider HT-2401G. Stable, compatible 4G coverage at the installation site enables operation from another location using your phone.

Confirm the destination country, device version, local network and supporting platform before choosing.

Several operators or multiple devices to control together

HT-2401G's shared access and multi-device control suit this working style. Different people can take part in management, and one phone can organise switching across devices.

Regular daily switching times

Consider HT-2401G's scheduling function to replace repeated manual actions with a planned schedule. Adjust it for the season, weather and actual water demand.

5. Check the pump load as well as the control method

Handheld and 4G control address how you send remote start/stop commands. Compatibility with your pump also depends on the power supply, motor load, starting current and existing control circuit.

A pump is a motor load: a power figure alone is not enough to establish compatibility. For equipment with a distribution or control cabinet, check the control interface, contactor and protection circuit.

Remote operation, shared access and scheduling do not automatically provide dry-running, overload or phase-loss protection. Confirm the protection required for the equipment. Installation and wiring must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

6. Prepare this information before buying

Whether buying for your own use or selecting equipment for a distributor's customer, these details help make selection and quotations more accurate:

  1. Equipment: photographs of the pump nameplate, power supply details and existing control cabinet.
  2. Location: country, region and installation environment.
  3. Operating needs: handheld, mobile, shared access, batch control or scheduled switching.
  4. Distance and obstacles: furthest operating point, buildings, trees and terrain along the path.
  5. Network: for 4G control, coverage at the intended installation position.
  6. Device count: how many devices need control, and whether they normally operate individually or together.

HONEST offers suitable HT-2401G options for Southeast Asian markets, including Vietnam and Indonesia, and for India, with one year of free mobile data included. Confirm destination compatibility, the service period and renewal arrangements when purchasing.
